Understanding Search Engines and SEO

First, let’s review the basics quickly.

What is SEO and how does it work?

In short, SEO is the process of optimizing your online presence to get more visibility and higher rankings in search engine results. The goal is to have your website and content show up at the top when someone searches for keywords related to your art.

Search engines do several things to deliver results to users:

·       Crawling: Find and index new and updated web pages

·       Indexing: Store and organize content for fast retrieval

·       Processing Queries: Understand and interpret user searches

·       Ranking: Determine the most relevant and authoritative results for each query

Understanding how search engines work is key to using SEO to get more visibility for your content.

Advanced Keyword Research and Strategy

At the heart of any SEO strategy is keyword research. Keywords are the terms people search for art like yours. Doing keyword research provides a roadmap to optimize your website content and target your audience.

For artists, targeting keywords related to the mediums, styles or subject matter you work in is key to SEO success.

Well, I held back on talking in detail about these special tools like Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, and SEMrush in the previous posts until now, but now is the time. These tools can give you insights into trending topics and competitive analysis. I have used Ahrefs, Surfer SEO, Rank Math SEO and Yoast SEO, Google Keyword Planner at different times.

ahrefs

AHREFS

*Update:

A comprehensive SEO keyword research tool that now includes AI-powered content analysis features. Starts from $129 (2025 pricing).****

Ahrefs is a all round SEO keyword research tool. Not only you can connect your website and audit your site or search for multiple keywords at once, but also depending on the plan that you’re on, you can do deeper keyword and SERP analysis as well. Starts from $119.

surfer

SURFER SEO

*Update:

User-friendly with enhanced portfolio optimization features. Integrated with WordPress and Google Docs. Starts from $99 (2025 pricing).***

Surfer SEO, on the other hand, is also a powerful keyword research tool and from my personal experience, perhaps a bit more user-friendly compared to Ahrefs. It has been integrated to many external apps but especially like WordPress and Google Docs, which are important for me. It starts from $89.

rankmath

RANK MATH SEO

*Update:

Now includes enhanced schema markup for artists and virtual exhibition support. Starts from $59 (2025 pricing).***

Rank Math SEO is a very user friendly SEO tool. Its plugin for WordPress sites is also very easy to use to do your on page SEO. Not only that of course, they provide all functions of a SEO, keyword tool as well as good analytics. It starts from $49.

While these tools are powerful, they’re not easy on the budget. The prices may vary from $49-$119. If you’re looking for a more personalized approach, check out our [Creative Digital Lift Services: SEO Strategies for Artists and Designers].

We’ll help you choose and use the right tools for your specific creative business. For those just starting out, free tools like SEMRush or Ubersuggest can get you going. But if you’re new to this keyword research topic, and looking for a budget friendly tools, I can suggest SEMRush or Ubersuggest.

Here’s what you need to know about keyword strategy:

There are two important parameters in keyword research: Keyword Difficulty and Volume.

Keyword Difficulty basically shows how competitive that keyword is and that niche. With the help of the SEO software listed above, you can learn the relevant keywords, matching keywords, secondary keywords, parent topics which would give you an understanding of the topic more in depth.

Search Volume basically shows the demand for that keyword or niche and how many times that keyword is searched per month from a particular country.

Now, here’s the important advice for new websites: Go for low difficulty high search volume keywords in your niche. Use long tail keywords to answer directly to the search intent.

Optimize Website Structure and Content

Now you have your target keywords; it’s time to optimize your website structure and content. Think of your website as a book’s table of contents, where each section is clearly defined and organized to guide the reader (and search engines) through the content.

Your homepage should target a broad keyword that sums up your overall site and be the entry point for both users and search engines. From there, category pages allow for more specific keyword targeting to help users find content and search engines to categorize and prioritize your work. That way, you can help search engines understand what your art website based on and your offerings.

If your art has a geographical element, creating location specific pages can be very effective for local SEO.

For page content, quality is key. Update your portfolio with new art, descriptions and blog posts regularly. Use descriptive file names, include alt text and compress images for faster loading. I use ShortPixel Image Optimizer as a plugin for my website. It optimizes the images automatically while guarding the image quality.

The 2025 version now supports next-gen formats like AVIF and WebP, which are crucial for balancing image quality with performance. (Learn more about optimizing art portfolio images in my [2025 SEO Guide]

Make sure your content is informative, engaging and includes your target keywords naturally.

During the optimization of your art website, it’s important to check your title tags, meta tags, meta description, the url optimization of your content. All this ‘technical’ explanation would help search engines understand your page’s content and increase your website’s visibility.

Image and Video Optimisation

I can not stress this point enough to my fellow artists. As a visual artist, optimizing your multimedia content is crucial for search engine visibility. Image search is one of your main resource to be discovered. Use descriptive file names and include alt text and captions to give context to your images and videos so more users and search engines can see them.

In your alt text and captions describe your art in detail, including medium, subject matter and style. This helps accessibility and also helps search engines to understand and index your visual content.

The same approach for your images can be used in various marketplaces like Spoonflower, Etsy, Redbubble and such. For a successful SEO strategy on those platforms, I certainly recommend describing your designs, art, and images.

There are different SEO techniques to increase the website traffic:

Technical SEO and Analytics

To really get to grips with SEO you’ll need to get into the technical stuff and use powerful analytics tools. Pattern designers and illustrators, check out our detailed [Keyword Research Guide for Pattern Designers] for industry-specific technical strategies. Understanding these technical aspects is crucial for portfolio visibility and client acquisition.

Also Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4 (GA4) serve different but complementary purposes in your digital strategy. Search Console is about search engine performance and GA4 is about user interaction and engagement across platforms, so you can track key performance indicators (KPIs) and measure the success of your SEO efforts.

*Update:

In 2025, Core Web Vitals benchmarks have become stricter for art websites:

– Loading time should be under 2 seconds

– Interactive elements should respond within 100ms

– Layout stability is crucial for gallery views GA4 now offers enhanced portfolio tracking features specifically valuable for artists.

Advanced SEO Strategies

As you get more comfortable with SEO you can start to explore advanced strategies to get more visibility and reach.

Off-Page SEO Strategies for Artists:

Building backlinks from other reputable sites tells search engines your content is valuable and trustworthy. Reach out to art blogs, online galleries and other relevant sites to feature your work or collaborate on content.

Using Schema Markup for Rich Snippets:

Schema markup helps search engines understand your website’s content and can lead to rich snippets in search results. These extra snippets can make your site stand out and get more clicks.

Local SEO for Artists:

If your work is shown locally or you’re involved in local art scenes, optimizing for local SEO can help people in your area find you. Include location based keywords in your content and make sure your business is listed in local directories and Google My Business.

A/B Testing for SEO Improvements:

A/B testing is comparing two versions of a page to see which one performs better for user engagement and SEO. Try different keyword strategies, content formats or page layouts to see what works for your audience and search engines.

Virtual exhibitions and AR/VR integration are now crucial for local art visibility. Make sure your Google Business Profile includes virtual tour options and online exhibition information.

SEO Best Practices

When implementing advanced SEO strategies make sure to avoid common mistakes that can hurt your search engine ranking. Avoid keyword cannibalization – the problem of multiple pages competing for the same keywords. Make sure every page targets a unique set of keywords.

Also focus on creating high quality, engaging content that includes targeted keywords naturally. Update your online portfolio with new artwork, detailed descriptions and blog posts to keep your site fresh and relevant.

Remember SEO is a long term strategy and results can vary. Some changes can show results in a few weeks, others can take months or even longer to kick in.
